REAL COMPANHIA VELHA FUNDADOR TAWNY VINHO DO PORTO
REAL COMPANHIA VELHA FUNDADOR TAWNY VINHO DO PORTO
In the sun-drenched valleys of the Douro, where the river winds like a silver thread through the rugged terrain, lies the birthplace of one of the world’s most iconic wines—Porto Fundador. This fortified wine, a marvel of tradition and technique, owes its unique character to the ancient process of halting fermentation with a precise addition of brandy. The result? A nectar that preserves the wine's natural sweetness and delivers a velvety, liqueur-like texture with every sip.
Introduced in 1928 as a tribute to King José I of Portugal, the visionary founder of Real Companhia Velha, Porto Fundador has become one of the most beloved Tawny Ports in Portugal. Crafted from traditional Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Touriga Nacional, this wine is a harmonious blend that encapsulates both heritage and craftsmanship.
Its color reflects its character—a tawny hue with amber undertones, symbolizing the wine's gentle aging in oak vats for approximately 4 years. This careful maturation imbues Porto Fundador with layers of complexity, from the aromas of dried fruits, honey, and raisins to the refined bouquet of red fruits complemented by subtle oak notes.
On the palate, it is generous and fruit-forward, with a balance of rich sweetness and vibrant acidity. Each sip reveals notes of dried apricot, walnut, and soft spices, leading to a long, elegant finish.
Best enjoyed slightly chilled, Porto Fundador pairs beautifully with desserts like chocolate or red berry tarts, as well as a selection of cheeses, particularly blue cheese, where its sweetness creates a perfect harmony with the bold, salty flavors.
